What Age Should Kids Start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
What Age Should Kids Start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
If you're wondering what age your child should start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions parents have when considering martial arts for their kids.
The truth is, there isn't one perfect age to start BJJ. Every child develops differently, but with the right coaching and environment, kids can begin building a strong foundation at a young age.
At Rise Up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, our Juniors program begins at age 5 and is designed to help kids develop confidence, discipline, coordination, and character while learning real Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a safe and encouraging environment.
Can a 5-Year-Old Really Learn Jiu-Jitsu?
Absolutely.
But Jiu-Jitsu for a five-year-old doesn't need to look exactly like Jiu-Jitsu for an older child or adult.
Younger students are still developing coordination, balance, attention span, and body awareness. Good kids' BJJ instruction meets them where they are.
Our Juniors classes introduce students to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through age-appropriate instruction, movement, drills, techniques, and games.
They're learning Jiu-Jitsu, but they're also learning how to listen to their coaches, control their bodies, work with a partner, follow instructions, and keep trying when something is difficult.
Those lessons are just as important as the techniques themselves.

What Is the Rise Up Juniors Program?
Our Juniors program is for ages 5–13.
As students grow and gain experience, they can continue developing more detailed Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills while building on the fundamentals they learned when they started.
Students have the opportunity to train both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, exposing them to different styles of training and helping them become well-rounded grapplers.
Classes include technique, drills, positional training, and age-appropriate live training while emphasizing one of the most important lessons in Jiu-Jitsu: take care of your training partners.
Does My Child Need to Be Athletic?
Not at all.
Your child doesn't need to already be strong, fast, flexible, coordinated, or experienced before starting BJJ.
That's what training is for.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gives kids an opportunity to develop balance, coordination, strength, endurance, and body awareness over time.
It also teaches something even more valuable: you don't have to be good at something the first time you try it.
Kids learn to struggle, problem-solve, improve, and try again.
Can Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Help Build Confidence?
One of our favorite things about Jiu-Jitsu is that confidence isn't something we simply tell children to have.
They build it through experience.
Learning a new technique, escaping a difficult position, remembering something their coach taught them, or making it through a challenging class gives a child evidence that they're capable of doing hard things.
Those small victories begin to add up.
Our goal isn't to create the toughest kid in the room. We want our Juniors to become more confident, disciplined, respectful, and comfortable working through challenges.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Safe for Kids?
Like any physical activity, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu comes with some risk. That's why the quality of the coaching and training environment matters.
Children should learn techniques progressively and train with instruction appropriate for their age and experience.
At Rise Up BJJ, we emphasize control, respect, good training habits, and taking care of our teammates.
Winning a round is never more important than the person you're training with.
Will My Child Have to Compete?
No.
Competition can be a great experience for kids who want to challenge themselves, but competition is never required at Rise Up BJJ.
We're a family-friendly, hobbyist-friendly academy.
Some of our students enjoy competing. Others simply love coming to class, learning Jiu-Jitsu, getting exercise, spending time with their teammates, and improving their skills.
There's a place here for both.
More Than Just Jiu-Jitsu
At Rise Up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, our core values are:
Faith. Growth. Integrity.
Of course, we want our students to become better at Jiu-Jitsu.
But that's not the only goal.
We want our Juniors to learn perseverance when something is difficult, integrity in how they treat others, respect for their coaches and teammates, and the confidence that comes from continued growth.
The lessons learned on the mats should matter when they step off them, too.
What Should My Child Expect at Their First BJJ Class?
Their first class doesn't need to be intimidating.
They'll meet their coaches and teammates, learn some basic movements and techniques, and get an opportunity to experience Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for themselves.
No previous martial arts experience is necessary.
They don't need to know the terminology.
They don't need to already be athletic.
And they definitely don't need to "get in shape first."
They just need to show up, listen, and be willing to try.
So, What's the Best Age to Start BJJ?
There's no single perfect age.
Some children are ready to begin at 5 years old, while others discover Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 8, 10, 12, or even later.
Starting younger can give children additional time to develop coordination, confidence, body awareness, and familiarity with the sport, but it's never a race to start as early as possible.
What's more important is finding a program and coaching environment that's right for your child.
